Abstract

The electric lighting and blinds have a great impact over a building energy consumption and users' visual comfort. The objective was to study the use of manual switching and blinds based on the visual perception and the relation between the light conditions of a corridor and room. For this experiment, 40 participants were divided into 2 groups (20 persons each): Group 1 was exposed to similar lighting conditions in the corridor and room, and Group 2, the illumination of the corridor was lower than the room. After the visual perception evaluation of each participant, horizontal and vertical illuminance was measured at the same position. The finds indicate that lighting levels in the corridor can influence the visual perception of a room and, in consequence, the electric light and blinds use. In conclusion, the vertical illuminance at the door can be a consistent variable to describe the use of manual switching of electric lighting and blinds.
