Abstract

The double skin facade (DSF) consists of a glazed outer layer placed over the building facade, forming an air cavity that can incorporate shading devices. Although there are relevant studies on the thermal performance of DSF systems, studies on the influence of architectural elements on the performance of natural lighting in such buildings are still few. This paper aims to compare the impact of sunshades located within the DSF cavity at different angles, widths, and positions on the natural lighting performance of an institutional building at two latitudes, 30°S and 19°S. For this, parametric computational simulation was carried out by using the ClimateStudio plugin, and the results were analyzed using the Useful Daylight Autonomy metric (UDI300-3000lx). The results did not indicate relevant differences between the simulated latitudes, but they demonstrated that more horizontal sunshades, with smaller sizes and positioned close to the internal layer of the cavity provide better daylighting for internal environments.
