Abstract

Appropriate acoustics in museums ensures environmental comfort, good communication, and uninterrupted art appreciation. However, there is a shortage of studies on acoustics focused on museology. This research aims to analyze the scientific production regarding the impact of museums’ acoustic quality on art interpretation by visitors. The study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. A total of 51 articles were selected, and through bibliometric and content analyses, it was found that studies on this topic have increased in recent years and that visitors' perceptions are related to the function of  the internal space, personal expectations, age, and intention to visit. It is concluded that the main techniques and applications discussed in the studies include: the use of advanced computing technologies, the analysis of emotional and interpretative responses in the museum experience, Grounded Theory, and the association between acoustics and cultural heritage preservation. Thus, this work provides a foundation for future studies and contributes to ensuring that acoustic quality is duly contemplated in museum projects.
