Abstract

In the construction industry, complex projects impact worker safety, requiring effective monitoring of this complexity. In this sense, the objective of this study is to analyze the complexity attributes in a hospital renovation and expansion project, relating them to occupational safety management. The research strategy adopted was the case study, with direct observations, document analysis and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed the presence of complexity attributes that directly impact security management: a large number and diversity of elements, dynamic interactions, and unexpected variability. Although no characteristics of the resilience attribute were identified, the lack of contingency plans and incident and accident investigation reports suggests a failure in the system's ability to anticipate and proactively deal with threats and opportunities. This study contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between complexity and work safety management in construction, highlighting the need for more effective management strategies to promote a safe and resilient work environment.
