Abstract

The use of alternative SCM, including Waste of Clay Brick (WCB), requires processing guided based on the reactivity of the material. In this sense, this study evaluated the influence of WCB particle size on pozzolanic reactivity. WCB with five different granulometry was compared to metakaolin, natural clay, and wastes of clay tiles (WCT). The pozzolanicity was evaluated by the R3 test applying isothermal calorimetry and quantifying the combined water content, in addition to the compressive strength and XRD/Rietveld of blended cement pastes type CPII-Z and CPIV. Decreasing the D90% diameter of the WCB from 33 to 11 µm improved the pozzolanic reactivity by 50%. For D90% diameter below 11 µm, the increase in reactivity (<2%) may not compensate for the costs associated with prolonged milling. The results showed the importance of reactivity-oriented processing, optimizing the recycling potential of WCB in blended cements.
