Abstract

The cement industries generate approximately 5% of the global emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) released annually into the atmosphere. Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is shown to have a pozzolanic effect, an ideal feature to be a convenient partial substitute for Portland cement. Thus, this research sought to evaluate the feasibility of partial substitution of Portland cement in self-leveling mortars, an innovative underlayment system composed of high-performance. The substitutions (sugarcane bagasse ash) were applied in percentages of 3%, 5% and 10% as a replacement of the Portland cement CP II-Z-32. To evaluate the properties of the mortar the following test were utilized: flow time and consistency in fresh state and compressive strength, elasticity modulus and water absorption by capillarity in the hardened state. To such a degree, the obtained results point to an optimum substitution content containing 10% of SCBA, proving the feasibility of the use of ash in self-leveling mortars.
