Abstract

Construction and demolition waste accounts for 30% of the solid waste generated globally. Ineffective management of this waste can leads to environmental and socioeconomic impacts, including risks associated with improper disposal, challenges in landfill construction and maintenance, and the loss of economic potential and job creation within the recycling industry. In this context, this literature review aims to assess the impacts, challenges, and alternatives for implementing effective waste management on a global scale. The analyzed studies highlight cultural, political, and economic challenges but also propose strategies to overcome them. Among these strategies, the adoption of localized solutions, environmental education, stakeholder collaboration, the development of specific legislation, and the strengthening of the recycling industry were identified. Thus, it is concluded that the implementation of effective construction and demolition waste management depends on the adoption of integrated policies, economic incentives, and social awareness, fostering sustainability and enhancing the value of this sector.
