Evaluation of the partial replacement of cement with sugarcane bagasse biochar on the mechanical performance of cementitious pastes

Abstract

The construction industry is a major emitter of CO2, particularly due to cement production. In order to contribute to the development of materials that can aid in addressing climate emergencies, this study investigated the partial replacement of CPV-ARI cement with sugarcane bagasse biochar as a supplementary cementitious material. The biochar was produced via pyrolysis and characterized through proximate analysis. Cement pastes were prepared with 0%, 2%, and 5% w/w replacements and water-to-cement ratios of 0.28 and 0.35. After 7 days, the specimens were subjected to compressive strength testing and microstructural characterization by SEM/EDS. The incorporation of 5% w/w biochar, with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.35, resulted in a 48% increase in mechanical strength. Morphological analysis indicated interactions between the biochar and hydration products. Therefore, biochar stands out as a promising alternative for reducing CO emissions in the construction sector.
