Abstract

The dispersion of particles generated by the stacking of mining waste can impact public health, degrade material assets, cause environmental damage and compromise safety in mining operations and adjacent areas. Given the limitations of traditional dust control methods, this study evaluated a stabilizing composite produced with superfine steel mill waste, inorganic activators and hydraulic binders. A prototype was developed on a laboratory scale, using conventional techniques of stacking dewatered waste, and subjected to simulated rain and wind action. Visual analysis indicated that, at a concentration of 2%, the composite prevented the suspension of particles, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable alternative. Thus, its use enables the reinsertion of steel mill waste, reduces emissions in iron mining operations and fosters opportunities for economic, social and environmental development in impacted regions.
