UPDATING AND ADAPTABILITY OF ELECTRICAL AND AIR CONDITIONING INSTALLATIONS IN PREFABRICATED BUILDINGS:

DISCUSSIONS ON A CAIC

Abstract

One of the discussions surrounding the conservation of modernist buildings is the obsolescence of their electrical and air conditioning installations. Updating these installations is essential to ensure that the building functions and meets contemporary usage needs, without de-characterizing its essential architectural features. These challenges permeate the adaptability of prefabricated buildings to a greater degree, given the complexity and exceptional nature of the components. Currently, the Comprehensive Care Centers for Children and Adolescents (CAICs), a project developed by João Filgueiras Lima, are agonizing over this issue, given the obsolescence of their facilities. The project uses prefabricated elements and components. The aim is to discuss the technical solutions adopted in the process of updating its electrical and air conditioning installations. The object of study was a former CAIC (now UEG Laranjeiras) located in the city of Goiânia. The building was inspected using photographic records. The results show the technical solutions used in updating the facilities of the modernist building. The conclusion is that most of the solutions used are reversible. In isolated cases, the interventions affected prefabricated components, which posed a problem when it came to replacing parts with the same performance.
