Abstract

Structural masonry is a building system known by rationality of the executive processes. Thus, the incorporation of waste from the rock crushing process can contribute to the reduction of environmental liabilities, in addict to improve its performance. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze the feasibility of using an alternative material, more sustainable and cheaper. The method used consisted in the total substitution of the natural small aggregate for another one of industrial origin. In order to do this, two sets of two-block prisms with the same mortar trace (1:1:4) were made, only the type of small aggregate being varied. The trace in question was chosen in order to be in the range of 70%a 100% of characteristic compressive strength of the block. The results of compressive strength of the prisms showed that both series presented similar behavior for the substitution content studied. Finally, it can be stated that among the various ways of reducing costs and environmental impacts in construction, the use of industrial sand may be an adequate solution, since it gives a new meaning to a material that would have been discarded in nature.
