Abstract

As the construction industry is one of the most energy-consuming sectors, it is necessary to minimize the environmental impacts that this activity involves. In this sense, the quality of the built environment, user comfort, and energy efficiency of the building are sought. Simulation programs are facilitators in thermal and energy performance analyses, which should be used from the beginning of the project, allowing the study of alternatives that balance constructive, economic, and performance solutions. In order to contribute with information that encourages the use of natural lighting simulation, which is crucial for building energy efficiency, this study aims to compare the functionality, efficiency, and usability of two computer tools for simulating natural light performance in a dynamic regime. The first one is the Insight 360 plug-in, incorporated in the Revit software (Autodesk), and the second is ClimateStudio (Solemma) associated with the Rhinoceros software (Robert McNeel & Associates). The method employed was a case study, in which its lighting performance was evaluated, specifically natural lighting conditions, through computational simulation, considering the protocol recommended by INI-C. As a result, it was observed that the Insight 360 plug-in from Revit, a BIM technology program used by architecture and engineering firms, allows performance evaluation through a single program. However, ClimateStudio responds more appropriately to regulatory requirements, has higher efficiency with a shorter processing time, and allows for better interpretation of evaluation metric results.
