Abstract

Evangelical churches are places where different and simultaneous functions prevail, such as: music and speech. The literature recognize that there are two main divisions inside this category: traditional churches, linked to the original idea of the protestant reform, and experiential church, which is characterized as a contemporary manifestation of worship focused on the user’s experience through music. Based on that, this article aims to characterize, from an acoustic viewpoint, an evangelical experiential church in the city of Natal/RN, considering its particularities of worship and the sound amplification system installed. Methodological proceadures include acoustic measure of acoustic parameters TR, EDT, C80, C50, D50 and %ALCONS, from impulsive responses obtained from the sound excitation of the electroacoustic system. It was also measured the equivalent sound pressure level during distinct parts of the cult. Results showed acoustics problems such as flutter echo, due to the parallelism from opposite walls, excessive reverberation on high frequencies, and some specific points of the audience with low levels of clarity and definition, which derive primarily from the receiver’s position regarding the sound source. This study allows concluding that even though the resources of sound reinforcement contribute to a good clarity, it does not discard the need for an acoustic intervention.
