Abstract

Natural ventilation is one of the main strategies for the passive cooling of buildings. Its use is relevant for obtaining the conditions of thermal comfort in the regions of the hot and humid tropical climate. But some building components limit the use of natural ventilation, e.g., the wall. The wall is a recurring element in the Brazilian housing, it is related to the need for security and privacy. Therefore, the insertion of porous elements can be configured as an interesting resource to reduce the negative effect provided by this component. This paper aim is to evaluate the influence of the position and direction of the laminated component in the performance of the porous walls for the use of natural ventilation in ground floor social housing. For such, parametric analyses were used through simulations based on the Computational Fluid Dynamic simulation (CFD), using the ANSYS CFX 18.1 software. Five wall configurations were used in a social housing model, one without opening and four with laminated porous components. The results indicate that the configuration with horizontal lamina directed downwards was showed better values in the wind circulation patterns and in the air velocity in the leeward region of the wall than the without openings model. However, these results were not reflected in improvements to the natural ventilation conditions in the internal space of the building. Thus, it is found that the need for insertion of the porous walls allied to other strategies of natural ventilation.
