Abstract

In this study the thermal comfort of the CAp-COLUNI school building – located in Viçosa-MG – was analyzed through computer simulation with the aid of Energy Plus and Euclid plugins for the SketchUp software. According to INMET 2016 climate data, available at the Projeteee platform (Designing Energy Efficient Buildings), the city’s population is under thermal discomfort for about half the year. The definitions of the thermal properties of the building materials were taken from NBR 15220 Part 2 (ABNT, 2005). The building’s natural ventilation was simulated with Airflow Network MultizoneWithoutDistribution. Project alterations were defined to adequate the building’s thermal comfort, based on bioclimatic strategies established by NBR 15220 - Part 3. Taking all in consideration, the obtained results demonstrate that the school building presents adequate thermal comfort during the summer; however, there are high rates of discomfort in the winter. It has been shown that the results of the 50% and 100% opening patterns were not too dissimilar, but the building showed a rise of monthy zone operative temperature of up to 16% with windows and doors closed. The proposed alternatives, albeit easing the sensation of thermal discomfort during cold days were not able to meet the guidance defined by the ASHRAE Standard 55.
