This study aimed to analyze the effect of shading on the thermal and energy performance of a single-family dwelling in the city of Pelotas – RS. The investigation was conducted through computer simulations with the software EnergyPlus, with two different alternatives for the building envelope’s thermal insulation: with a higher and a lower thermal transmittance. Parametric studies were conducted about the buildings external surfaces. The shadowing variations were: without shadow, with the roof shaded, with walls and windows shaded, and total shaded. The dwelling was analyzed with a natural ventilation and with air conditioning, as indicated by the RTQ-R. It was concluded that the energy consumption was lower in the house with the higher thermal insulation when it had the walls and windows shaded, especially in the Summer, demanding less energy consumption for cooling. The lowest performance was obtained by the house with the lowest thermal insulation, when totally shaded. For both insulation levels, the highest comfort level was obtained when there was no shading.
