Abstract

The aim of this analysis was to compare the thermal performance of two sets with potential application in social housing, being a conventional one, made of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and another of an alternative material, without climatic context of the semiarid in Alagoas - Brazil. PVC was selected as an example of conventional ceiling and the alternative was made of bamboo fodder. The paniculata of Guadua, popularly known as "taboca", was chosen as the example of alternative material. It is an experimental research in which thermal variables (air and surface temperature) were monitored in three test cells built in masonry and a roofing system with ceramic tiles, two of them with ceilings (PVC and bamboo) and one without ceiling application. Measurements were performed during three consecutive summer days (hot and dry). The air temperature was recorded with dataloggers, with hourly and continuous data, and the recording of the surface temperature was performed with thermographic photographs at 9.00 a.m., 12.00 p.m. and 3.00 p.m., during the three monitoring days. The results showed that both ceilings presented good thermal performance, with a reduction of the internal air temperature in the order of 3.0ºC (PVC) and 2.8ºC (bamboo) in relation to the outside air temperature, and reduction around 0.7ºC (both ceilings) in relation to the test cell without it. As for the surface temperature, the bamboo lining presented better thermal performance, with a mean reduction of 3.9ºC in relation to the ceramic tile, at noon. It was verified, therefore, that bamboo Guadua paniculata is a material potentially used as ceiling in dwellings of social interest in the semi-arid of Alagoas, with the purpose of a better thermal comfort in the buildings.
