Abstract

Openings have a major impact in the thermal performance of buildings, and the use of glazing with lower solar factor combined with values of maximum opening area are often recommended in literature as a strategy to improve the thermal performance of the envelope. In Brazil, however, the relation between variations in opening area and changes in the solar factor of the glazing is yet to be studied. This research intends to analyze how much it is possible to increase the opening area of a window with the reduction of the solar factor of the glazing, maintaining the same heat gain through the window. It was conducted a series of simulations with the software EnergyPlus in a base model with a floor area of 9 m² and a ceiling height of 2,5 m. It was added to the base model variations in window-to-floor ratio (16% to 30%), solar factor (0,39 to 0,87) and orientation (north, east, south and west), resulting in 160 models, which were simulated considering the cities of Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and São Luís. The results show that it is possible to establish a equivalence between solar factor and opening area by fixing a value of heat gain through the window, and that these equivalences have a similar behavior in all orientations, considering the same city.
