A library school should provide condition of environmental comfort (thermal, luminous, acoustic and
ergonomic) that generate a space to encourage the reading activity. This work aimed to define a new
architectural solution for the library of the Dante Marcucci State School, located in Caxias do Sul, and
evaluate its impact on the thermal performance of the environment. The main condition of the project was
the low level of financial resources. Therefore, all proposals should be designed in a way that minimize
costs. Thermal performance was defined through computational simulations with the software EnergyPlus.
For that, were compared the percentage of the number of hours in thermal comfort found in the library
environment for each situation evaluated and for the current situation. Moreover, the thermal exchanges that
occur through the surfaces surrounding the library were analysed. From these analyses it was possible to
reach a design alternative where thermal comfort was increased by 5% when compared to the current
building situation. Although this is a small difference, when the final proposal is compared with the initial
proposal, the increase reaches 12%. Could be also worthwhile to observe that the heat flux analysis system
was very important to find the best design solution, since this analysis turned possible to verify how each of
the alternatives affected the thermal performance of the environment. With this, the authors can conclude
that using only the final analysis of the thermal comfort may not be enough to reach a satisfactory result.
