Abstract

Environmental noise is one of the leading pollutants, despite being largely ignored. Noise pollution causes damage to health, the economy, and the environment. This work evaluates the noise generated in a metalmechanic industry installed in a residential area in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, Brazil. The equivalent sound pressure levels of the noises generated by forklifts were measured during the day and night to analyze noise pollution. Diagnostic noise maps made in the Predictor software were calculated to assess the current situation and design measures to mitigate industrial noise. The results showed that the generated noise exceeds the legislation levels in all the evaluated scenarios, exposing about 3915 people to these levels. Daytime noise reaches 63 dB and 67 dB in the LAeq inhabited areas for nighttime noise. The forklift noise was 84 dB. The proposed actions for industrial, daytime, and nighttime noise and the specific noise generated by the forklift minimized the noise propagation in urban areas to acceptable levels. Finally, it was concluded that acoustic maps associated with in-situ measurements are great tools to determine the sound impact, reducing sound levels.
