The building envelope design is fundamental for good energetic and luminous performance of internal environments. Within this scope, the opening system has the great role of allowing or not the contact of the spaces with solar radiation and light, thus influencing lighting, thermal and energy performance. Shading devices and solar control glass, although widely studied, are not completely understood, and should be studied more deeply, considering optical, geometric and thermal characteristics. In this sense, the objective of this paper is to evaluate thermal and luminous performance of different configurations of horizontal shading elements associated to several solar control glasses. Two geometries of shading elements are considered: overhangs and horizontal louvers considering four vertical shading angles (VSA), combined with 14 kind of glasses. The study utilizes EnergyPlus as an analyses tool. The simulations consider the city of Florianópolis-SC Brazil. Results indicate which glasses presented better thermal and luminous balance, discuss equivalences between the combination of glasses with different solar factors and visible transmission associated with elements of shading. They point out that the optical assembly of the glass can change the performance of shading elements for the incident climate. It indicates that even having similar VSA, overhangs and horizontal louvers can present different results associated with the light reflection by the louvers, with differences that intensify in the 45 ° VSA.
