Abstract

Solar energy is a renewable, carbon-free source that exists in great abundance on earth, because it comes from an unlimited source. Brazil has great potential to generate photovoltaic (PV) solar energy due to the levels of solar radiation, which characterizes an alternative to complement the current Brazilian energy matrix, which is derived, in the most part, from hydroelectric plants. Several public legislations emerged in the last ten years, aimed at encouraging this technology in the national scenario, however the effective participation of this source in the country's energy matrix still small, even though it has shown growth in recent years. This study aims to evaluate the photovoltaic generation capacity from the Federal Institute of Espirito Santo - campus Colatina, and its subsequent distribution in the public network, through studies of the coverage area, data collection of solar radiation to the site, research of consumption of campus energy and system design. Thus, it was estimated the amount of energy generated that exceeded the annual amount of energy from the campus by 60% as well as the economic feasibility of the system, which presents a value of investment of approximately five years and a period of return generated by the technology implemented of 20 years. These results allow the campus to plan in the long term the use of its funding, which currently has almost 40% of its total allocated to the payment of energy bills, other demands and investments within the institution.
