The work presents results of an architectural project in the harbour area of Rio de Janeiro (Porto Maravilha), gathering an unused building, abandoned in the 1980s, in its transformation to residential use and the adjacent site, currently used as a parking lot. This one will be transformed in a commercial building. The two buildings, in the new project, are connected by the ground floor. The residential building had its design decisions related to the facade directly based on the guidelines of the labeling process of the PBE Edifica, but maintaining some of its original characteristics. The commercial building had the conception of its facade mediated by three options developed and analyzed by the software Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Ladybug, Honeybee and EnergyPlus, each one in its specificity. At the residential building, the decision to incorporate shading mechanisms in the openings and cross ventilation was crucial to its performance. At the commercial building, an option with a high percentage of opening and use of special glass was tested; then an option with an average percentage of opening and common glass and then an option with a medium percentage of opening, common glass and shading elements. Even without using special solar control glasses, the last option was the one that presented better performance, by the combination of not excessive opening and presence of shading elements. Based on the combination adopted, the option with the use of special glass in a large opening percentage presented a 13% higher energy consumption and the option with the use of common glass in an average opening percentage, 20% higher. The final decision of the configuration of the facade, for a forecast of lower consumption over the life of the building, was made possible by the valuable assistance provided by the software.
