Abstract

The phenomenon of city consolidation has limited the potential of green infraestructure incorporation -parks, squares, alineation trees- arising new forms of vegetation asociates to building envolves: Green Roofs and Green Walls. Present research tests the impact of a single typology of Vertical Greenery System (VGS), the Traditional Green Facade (TGF), in the thermal condition of living place typology buildings of the city of Mendoza, Argentina; which climate is dry desert (BWk - Köppen-Geiger). Four study cases has been studied during January and February of 2019, located in Metropolitan Area of Mendoza (MAM): two houses with TGF in East and North orientation, and two more similar houses without TGF, used as witness houses. Those buildings has been built with the most common local constructive method. Variables of exterior and interior surface temperature, exterior and interior ambient temperature and relative humidity has been registred. Those cases showed up to 26,5 °C reduction of exterior wall surface temperature, 7 °C reduction of interior wall surface temperature and 3,2 °C reduction of interior air temperature, whose magnitudes varies according to the every microclimate condition, the species of climbing plant used and its thickness. This results endorse the potential of the application of this typology of VGS to mitigate the high exterior and interior temperatures typical from dry arid climates and its potential to thermo-energetic rehabilitation of Mendoza city building park.
