Abstract

This article discusses an architectural proposal for reform and expansion of the Institute of the Blind of Paraíba Adalgisa Cunha (ICPAC), based on information from a Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE). As the institution offers health and education services for visually impaired people, the proposal sought solutions that reverberated in its greater humanization, facilitating the accessibility of the spaces and orientation of the users. The first stage of the design process included, in addition to bibliographic research and reference studies, the post-occupation evaluation, in the technical and user consultation stages. In the technical stage of the POE were carried out architectural survey of the building (measurements), photographic documentation and walkthrought. Understanding users' perceptions involved: semi-structured interviews with ten (10) key people who experience the site on a daily basis; application of Poem of Desires to fifty (50) goers; Accompanying the tour Accompanied by five (05) participants (01 blind person is knowledgeable about the space and 04 people who did not know it - blind, with reduced vision, wheelchair and with reduced mobility). The results (presented through the Map of Findings and the Table of Indications of Design) were associated to studies of precedents and analysis of related projects, indicating the importance of patios as reference elements, environmental comfort and orientation, as well as valorization of the orthogonality of the circulations and use of sensory elements. Based on this information, the project proposal (pre-project level) prioritized the conditions of access and orientation to the environment, the sustainable use of materials and the adoption of strategies of environmental comfort (natural ventilation).
