Abstract

This article presents the results of two Scientific and Technological Initiation (ICeT) studies that, for two years and using a number of Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) tools applied to environmental comfort, analyzed chosen areas of Sesc Pompeia (built in 1982) and Sesc 24 de Maio (built in 2017) and compared both buildings, exposing the different and similar active and passive strategies used by Lina Bo Bardi and Paulo Mendes da Rocha, both modernist architects, to achieve environmental comfort. The studies were able to find a link between the limitations to user comfort, use history, building occupation and its structural characteristics by documental research, technical visits along with measurements of environmental parameters and unstructured interviews with key-people. Regarding the issues raised about environmental comfort in both projects, it was possible to conclude that the Sesc 24 de Maio has, to date, a smaller number of occurrences related to the quality of spaces for the user than Sesc Pompeia, mainly in the requirements related to thermal and acoustic comfort. The results for each building as well as the comparative analysis between them aim to amplify the knowledge of which project characteristics favor or not the environmental performance of the cultural buildings located in the city of São Paulo.
