Abstract

The space adequacy according to aging needs is essential to enable elderly to keep their routine activities in a comfortable and safe manner, contributing to active aging. In this article, it is presented a case study of adaptation of a two-floor residence to an elderly resident, including the diagnosis of the current situation of the building and intervention proposals for two different scenarios, with its implementation costs. The objective is to evaluate technical and economic viability of adapting the house where the elderly already lives. The method includes a quantitative and qualitative evaluation phase, developed by in loco visits, and the intervention proposals development phase. As results, it is demonstrated the possibility of improving the safety, comfort, health and life quality of elderly with low investments It is concluded that, due to the benefits provided, the accelerated population aging and the huge public expenditures resulting from health issues caused or aggravated by inadequacies in the physical environment, there should be greater incentives for the adaptation of residences to elderly demands.
