Schools should support productivity in teaching and learning taking into account pedagogical tendencies of the 21st century. The well-being of users is closely related to the environmental comfort of a school building. To ensure a safe, comfortable, functional and an environment that encourages education, design patterns (DPs) have been developed. This paper aims to present possible manners to guarantee the inclusion of DPs in FDE (Foundation for Education Development in the State of São Paulo) school architecture design process, including POE and briefing. FDE administers school design based on a number of well-defined specifications to ensure construction quality standards. School design solutions can be enhanced by evidence-based research – including POE – guiding the design process and briefing. Considering DP in these phases can increase environmental comfort, especially considering functionality. The method is based on case studies of FDE schools, structured analysis of FDE documents and proposal of DPs inclusion on its school design process. A FDE flow chart presenting how DPs can be introduced into FDE's school design process without substantial costs is our main result. The paper thus shows how standardized school design processes, such as FDE’s, can be reconsidered under the light of DPs, considering new tendencies of education in the 21st century and providing positive impacts on school buildings.
