Abstract

Construction and operation of buildings are responsible for approximately 36% of the global end-use of energy and almost 40% of the carbon dioxide emissions related to power generation. All phases of a building (from the extraction of raw materials to the final disposal) contribute to energy consumption. Thus, studies that take into account the pre and post-use of buildings, through the life cycle energy analysis (LCEA), are becoming increasingly necessary. This paper aims to carry out a systematic review on life cycle energy analysis of buildings, bringing to the reader an updated view of the state of the art on the subject, since the data related to the energy consumption of buildings has been changing significantly over the past few years. In general, the embodied energy of the buildings’ pre-use phase has been playing an increasingly important role in the life cycle analysis, and, therefore, should not be neglected when assessing the energy efficiency of a building.
