Abstract

Natural ventilation studies are important to provide thermal comfort, air quality and healthiness of the occupied environment. Thus, it is important to understand the dynamics of air movement in internal spaces and to become aware of the impact that openings, façade devices and internal barriers have on the air flow and, consequently, on the occupants' comfort. Building requalification strategies to be effective and promote better overall conditions of environmental comfort must consider the different environmental variables in a combined way, observing the effects on the thermal, luminous, acoustic performance, etc. This article, however, is restricted to the analysis of the impacts caused by facade devices on the air flow in the internal environment, with the identification and characterization of such phenomena, so that once the prediction of facade devices plays a part in the requalification project, the effects on the natural ventilation are better understood. Different methods can evaluate the effects of natural ventilation on the urban scale to the building. The study described in this article is based on natural ventilation tests in a water-table with the representative physical model of an office building in the city of São Paulo/Brazil (USP – São Paulo University/Central Administration building). Nineteen tests were carried out and, based on the results, it was possible to identify the shading elements on the façades that may have an influence on the direction and speed of wind flows within the spaces.
