Abstract

This research addresses the performance of sun protection elements, specifically the light shelves. Humid tropical climates tend to receive large amounts of solar radiation, which can impair the luminous comfort of the users of the environments as well as aggravate the thermal gains. Therefore, the use of sun protection elements is an alternative to contain direct sunlight in indoor environments. Thus, this research aims to investigate the luminous performance of light shelves in a tropical-humid climate from different configurations in their geometry, specifically the angulation. The methodology covers bibliographic research about the use of light shelves, the use of the local Sun Path Diagram of Vitória- ES, as well as computer simulation with the TropLux software. The simulations occurred in an office environment with the openings oriented to North and South, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, every day of the year. Five analysis models were adopted: a) without a shelf; b) with horizontal shelf; c) with a 5 ° inclined shelf; d) 10 ° inclined shelf; e) 15 ° inclined shelf. From the results it can be concluded that, for the North, the most inclined model presented the best performance in 2/3 of the year (March to October) reaching a percentage difference of 16% in relation to the other models. As for the South orientation, it is noticed that the inclination of the shelves does not bring significant improvements when compared to the horizontal shelf. In relation to Daylight Autonomy, this was verified in almost 100% of the simulated hours, meeting the parameter of minimum illuminance used.
