Abstract

This article aims to discuss and provide answers to three main questions: how architectural atmospheres can be qualified; how they can be perceived; what are its components. As a research method, a narrative review was used. At the end of the work, it was concluded that architectural atmospheres can be qualified according to the emotional states that they cause to users. Atmospheres can be perceived and apprehended through the human sensory apparatus, but the process of cognitive and psychological assimilation depends on variables such as external stimuli and intrinsic and subjective concerns of each individual. Atmospheres are constituted of several components, being the architectural means only a part of them. It is possible to state that designers can influence the atmospheres they design, but that this influence is limited and varies from person to person.
