Abstract

Natural lighting plays a fundamental role in visual comfort and the energy efficiency of buildings, reducing the need for artificial lighting and promoting occupant well-being. Light shelves are architectural devices designed to optimize the distribution of natural light in indoor environments by reflecting sunlight onto the ceiling and increasing its penetration into spaces. This study conducts a systematic literature review to investigate the application and efficiency of light shelves, with a focus on the city of São Paulo. To achieve this, scientific articles published in national and international databases were analyzed using specific keywords in both Portuguese and English. The selection of studies considered criteria such as the use of computational simulation models and the real-world application of these devices. The results aim to establish a baseline model for future research on the performance and feasibility of light shelves in the architectural context of São Paulo.
