The soundscape of Rio de Janeiro’s low emission zone

The main objective of the article is to characterize the soundscape in three locations within the Low Emission District of Rio de Janeiro, which was established by a policy that primarily aims to improve air quality, but that has the potential to improve the sound environment. The methodology followed the ISO 12913 standard, including quantitative data collection, with sound level measurements, and qualitative data collection, with the application of questionnaires. In most points, the sound levels were above the limits recommended by local technical standards, and the assessment of the soundscape varied between points but tended to be eventful, with traffic being the main sound source present in the responses. These results are explained by the free circulation of combustion vehicles and by the lack of strategies implemented, which are only the light rail vehicle and the requalification of a section of Erasmo Braga Avenue.
