Abstract

The climatic suitability of urban outdoor environments is an important factor for achieving human thermal comfort, particularly in tropical cities, where much of the urban activities can be developed in outdoor spaces. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to studies on thermal comfort in tropical urban spaces, evaluating the influence of different urban configurations on the thermal comfort of users in Maceió, a tropical city in northeastern Brazil. External measurement points were chosen based on the distinct spatial configurations in urban fractions in the city studied. Mobile measurements of the climatic variables, air temperature, relative humidity, air speed and globe temperature, were carried out, and questionnaires were simultaneously applied to users in two different neighborhoods, where the measurement points were located. Likewise, the actual thermal sensation was compared with the thermal sensation obtained from calculations and indexes existing in the technical literature. The results found show that the characteristics of urban spaces influence the values of the climatic variables and consequently the sensation of comfort or discomfort of users.
