Thermal comfort in temporary shelters in Brazil

Abstract

The recent tragedy that struck the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, led to the need to assess the thermal comfort of temporary shelters in Brazil, based on the interest of companies in providing temporary housing to the homeless. Computer simulations were carried out to assess the thermal comfort of three types of shelters, one provided by a national manufacturer, one by an international manufacturer and the last by UNHCR, for three cities in different bioclimatic zones: Boa Vista/RR, Canela/RS and São Paulo/SP. The results indicated the number of degree-hours of discomfort due to cold and heat, which demands a case-by-case study according to the climate. In cold climates, it is recommended to use thermally insulating material and avoid the use of thin material; in hot climates, the use of insulating material shows little improvement.
