Community ambiances in ecovillages
Reflections on effective sustainability based on a case of study at the 5th Continental Meeting of Communities

This paper investigates how temporary experiences in sustainable communities, such as ecovillages, can contribute to addressing the climate crisis. It presents an exploratory ethnographic case study conducted at the 5th Continental Community Gathering promoted by the Latin American Ecovillage Network in 2025, held in an ecovillage in Misiones, Argentina. Through participant observation, the built environment and sustainable practices were evaluated with a focus on identifying community ambiances, a concept expressing the interconnection between subjects and space around a common good. It is noted that events simulating sustainable lifestyles promote socio-environmental awareness and deeper affective relationships between people and nature. The study concludes that community ambiances integrate dimensions of collective living and nature-based solutions, and that the ecovillage movement’s networked articulation fosters sustainable practices and innovations, with governance as a transversal component of sustainability dimensions, capable of addressing local challenges and inspiring global reflections.
