Abstract

In order to assist in the development of projects that employ Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), this article presents a prototype of a tool (SUDS-UP) to support project design. As a methodological approach, technical data of different SUDS devices were systematized in tables, relating them to physical and urban constraints, as well as to pre-sizing parameters. Based on this production, the tool was designed in sequential stages, allowing the designer to identify the potential use of open building spaces for the implementation of SUDS, in addition to estimating its contribution to flood mitigation. The SUDS-UP tool was tested in a study area located in the neighborhoods of Glória and Catete, in Rio de Janeiro, where two conceptual projects were developed with different SUDS applications and their respective estimates of rainwater storage volume. These results were compared with those obtained through mathematical modeling, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of the tool. The results indicate that SUDS-UP can be used in the preliminary study phase of projects, especially when the solutions are implemented in areas close to critical flooding points.
