Distribution and relevance of environmental parks in Teresina-PI

Abstract

The city of Teresina, capital of the state of Piauí, located at the confluence of the Parnaíba and Poti rivers, has developed a dynamic relationship with its riverside landscapes over time. Starting in the 1990s, with the strengthening of environmental legislation, the city implemented a policy of creating environmental parks along the rivers, aiming at the preservation and qualification of public spaces. The objective of this article is to analyze the implementation and distribution of riverside environmental parks in Teresina, starting in the 1990s, discussing their contributions to environmental preservation, while highlighting the challenges and inequalities in access to these areas. The methodology involved bibliographic research and analysis of the spatial distribution of parks in the different areas of Teresina. The results reveal the expansion of parks, especially in the North, Central and East zones, but also highlight the unequal concentration of these facilities, with less coverage in the Southeast and South zones. It is concluded that, despite the advances, challenges related to equity and strengthening the relationship between the urban population and rivers persist.
