The need for institutional growth implies knowing the problems and the need for sustainable development, for which a series of indicators are collected. The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of indicators related to waste generated worldwide, Brazil and Portugal and in two universities in these countries. The data collection and analysis were carried out using OECD data and institutional sustainability reports. The generation of municipal waste worldwide has been reducing from 2008 to 2017 (541.8 to 524.4 kg/capita). Portugal presented a reduction until 2013 (513.7 to 436.7 kg/capita), but in the following years its rates increased (449.9 to 485.2kg/capita). In Brazil (2009 to 2011) there was a reduction in the indices (271.9 to 266.8 kg/capita) and an increase in the year 2012 (288.7 kg/capita). In the University of Portugal there was an increase in the years 2010 to 2014 (4.02 to 9.02 kg/student) and a reduction in 2015 (3.46 kg/student), as well as in Brazil, which showed an increase in the years 2016 to 2018 (19.53 to 25.08kg/student) and a reduction in the last year (20.13kg/student). Universities point to a growing trend in waste generation, while the world data a reduction. There is evidence of the need for actions to reduce these indices.
