Abstract

It is known that the correct specification of cladding materials for facades and roofs, according to the climate and urban characteristics of a building can enhance the thermal energy performance and mitigate environmental impacts, such as reducing carbon dioxide emissions and mitigating the effects that cause urban heat islands. With this in mind, this study aims to evaluate some thermal and optical properties of a type of ceramic cladding commonly used in building facades. The research methodology consisted of evaluating 13 samples of different shades. Laboratory tests were conducted on the respective samples to measure the reflectance (solar and visible) and absorptance (solar and visible) properties, thermal emittance, and solar reflectance index (SRI). The results obtained were consistent with the values found in the literature. In the case of solar reflectance, the results ranged from 0.718 (White) to 0.123 (Black), and the values obtained for thermal emittance were within the range of 0.80 to 0.90. Therefore, the relevance of different shades in the surface response to incident radiation, i.e., in the thermal and optical surface properties of the samples, was observed.
