Abstract

The sound sources propagated in urban space, especially road traffic noise, have raised noise pollution rates in large cities. For the evaluation and monitoring of this noise pollution, the noise maps appear, which allow to represent, through the isofonic curves, the sound pressure levels acting in the urban space. In this context, the current study allows to evaluate the influence of physical and environmental factors on the propagation of road traffic noise, by comparing two Brazilian highways, BR 163 (Sinop / MT) and BR 230 (João Pessoa / PB). As a result, it was observed that although BR 230 has a much higher traffic volume than BR 163, but the BR 230 in João Pessoa presented a less critical scenario regarding road traffic noise. This result was due to the direct influence that the rough topography and the dense vegetation, present in the margins of the BR 230, applied in the propagation of the sound wave. Due to the large number of urban voids in Sinop, sound waves reach greater distances, consequently increasing noise pollution in the urban mesh. In addition to the urban voids, the Sinop road network is less concentrated when compared to João Pessoa. Both cities present areas of evaluation criteria, in dB(A), in disagreement with the parameters established with NBR 10.151. The research demonstrated that the mapping is an important tool for visualizing environmental noise, and can be used as parameters for the establishment of measures to combat noise pollution.
