A building's thermal performance results from interacting with the internal sources, envelope, and external climate, and it can be analyzed through the heat exchanges in the environments. In buildings, heat transfer co-occurs by convection, conduction, and radiation. The thermal balance by convection is related to the indoor air, making it possible to verify the heat exchanges and their impact on adding or removing heat by passive means (natural ventilation) or active means (air conditioning). Thus, this work applied the convection thermal balance method to analyze the influence of the windows' opening factor for ventilation (FV) on heat exchanges in a residential building's living room operating with naturally ventilated and hybrid behavior. In addition, modifications are proposed to be used in the envelope to improve the thermal performance. With the results, it was possible to verify that the modification in the FV does not significantly changes the heat exchanges in the hybrid behavior. The thermal balance helped the thermal performance analysis, making it possible to propose improvements, such as changing the building's roof to reduce heat gains in the hottest months and losses in the coldest months.
