This paper presents an analysis of the role of shading for openings in the reduction of indoor heat gain by the translucent surfaces of a building, through a case study of the headquarters building of the City Hall of Joinville/SC. It was used an analisys methodology of solar incidence and shading masks through the Solar Chart and Calculation of Heat Flow. The characteristics of the building are evaluated in comparison with the hypothesis that the same building did not have any type of protection. The obtained results show that the shading tools present in the building significantly decrease the heat gains in all facades. It was clearly demonstrated the significance and impact of the use of solar protection elements in thermal comfort.
