Abstract

The building materials are usually chosen by the cost of construction and productivity. But often, the user comfort and energy consumption are overlooked. This paper proposes to evaluate the thermal and energetic performance of a single-family residential building with the use of computational simulation tools, considering the structural system variation between Light Steel Framing and structural masonry with flat concrete slab. The hours of comfort and thermal discomfort were verified based on the Brazilian standard considering the use of air-conditioning and the effects of natural ventilation. It was evaluated the consumption of electric energy for the purposes of climatization of the long-stay rooms, for the two construction systems. The results were: With abundant natural ventilation, the envelope variation is not significant; In the cases in which there is no natural ventilation, but air conditioning, the Light Steel Framing building has proved to be more efficient both in promoting comfort and in energy consumption than the structural masonry option.
