Abstract

Alternative to adapt buildings to local climate is the use of wind catchers above the level of the roof, combined or not with another passive cooling system such as green roofs, promoting air renewal and hygrothermal comfort. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the suitability of wind catchers in combination with green roof on buildings, for eight Brazilian cities according to each Brazilian bioclimatic zone, during winter and summer conditions. The methodology includes the following steps: construction of the models geometry, definitions of the envelope, including natural ventilation and simulations with EnergyPlus® software for eight Brazilian cities during winter and summer periods. The results analysis confirmed that the tetradirectional tower obtained a greater number of choices because it provided considerable amount of air changes and reduced time with outdoor temperature lower than indoor temperatures. The presence of green roof on the tower and building was also the better solution, since it offers high thermal inertia, which promotes the cooling of the slab, allowing increasing the comfort period inside the building. In addition, the use of building simulations proved to be a satisfactory tool, enabling the evaluation of the analysed environments in a short period of time.
