Abstract

The study of thermal comfort in outdoor areas is important for understanding individuals' comfort levels and for climate-sensitive urban planning. The thermal perception of users of open spaces is influenced by several factors, and the use of artificial air conditioning in environments is one of these aspects. This study seeks to verify the thermal perception of users of open spaces in the city of Pelotas - RS, regards to the impact generated by the prolonged use of air conditioning systems in internal environments. 53 data monitoring campaigns were carried out simultaneously with the application of a questionnaire to the population, from July 2019 to March 2020. To record the variables, the TGD-400 thermal stress meter was used and the questionnaires were structured according to ISO 8996 (2004), 7730 (2005), 9920 (2007) and 10551 (2015) regulations. The Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) index was used to compare the results obtained for those who use artificial air conditioning and those use natural ventilation. The results show that the impact caused by the use of artificial air conditioning alters the thermal perception of individuals, influencing therefore, on the limits of the thermal comfort ranges.
