Sounds can produce different environments which, due to their characteristics, can make a space both hostile and attractive to its users. This research proposes to describe urban sound phenomena, through an integrated approach of quantitative and qualitative methods, in which sound is treated not only as a nuisance factor, but also in its positive aspects, which are fundamental for environmental perception. This paper aims to map the diversity of ambience sound in a sector of Rio de Janeiro's Central Area, comparing the scenario before and during the SARS-CoV 2 pandemic. The researchers walked on foot from Praça Tiradentes to Av. Presidente Vargas, crossing the so-called Saara (popular shopping area). At eight fixed points of evaluation, audio recordings, SPL measurements, videos and field records were filled out. The data collected during the second wave of the pandemic were compared with the evaluation carried out in the second semester of 2019. The results indicated that, despite the reduced flow of vehicles and pedestrians, the ambiences, mainly at the Saara evaluation points, were very similar to those of the previous research.
