This work aimed at verifying the potential of an alternative method to evaluate the daylight provision, based on the Daylight Factor, of the European standard prEN 17037:2018, to estimate the lighting energy consumption, due the harvesting daylight. First, the proposal for application of the method was presented. To access the application potential a case study was proposed, which was evaluated comparatively by the proposed method and by annual simulation based on climate. The case study was evaluated considering two scenarios of lighting controls distribution, two types of sensors, dimming and steps, and three locations. The relevance of choosing a single point was tested, located in the lower daylight portion of the sensor influence area, to simulate the use standard and the method potential of estimate the lighting energy consumption. The results showed that the choice of the lowest daylight point was valid, and further studies were recommended to determine the method application limit. They also showed the underestimation of the daylight by this method, with some exceptions depending on the orientation and the city evaluated. The sensor distribution also affects their performance. The potential of two types of sensors was confirmed, with greater accuracy for dimmers. As general conclusion, it can be affirmed the method potential to estimate the daylight energy saving.
