Abstract

Urban environments, increasingly densified, and the variations that occur in external spaces affect local microclimate, interfering in the users' satisfaction with the thermal environment. Survey methods for checking comfort levels in external areas are used. Calibration of thermal comfort ranges occurs through the use of a thermal comfort index for external areas together with surveys. In this study, using the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) thermal index, the objective is to characterize thermal comfort bands for open spaces for female and male subjects in a city with a Cfa climate (Pelotas - RS). The sample obtained from 1644 votes of thermal perception, 1029 referring to females and 615 to males, was obtained during 53 monitoring campaigns, carried out in five different locations between July 2019 and March 2020. The TGD- 400 equipment was used for the collection of climatic data and the following variables were monitored: globe temperature; dry bulb temperature; wet bulb temperature and air speed. From the collected data, the values of mean radiant temperature (TRM) and equivalent physiological temperature (PET) were obtained for each validated questionnaire. The thermal comfort range for females in open spaces in Pelotas has lower and upper limits, respectively, 17.1°C and 26.2°C, on the PET scale. For the males, the thermal comfort zone obtained has a lower limit of 16.9°C, an upper limit of 26.5°C PET. The calibrated comfort ranges are similar in relation to the lower and upper limit values and show disparities in relation to the original band.
